
Scenarios based on 'genres' have emerged, including Defense maps, StarCraft Diplomacy, RPGs, Magic: The Gathering, Madness, or thematic maps such as those based on: "The Lord of the Rings". The "Fastest" maps have been criticized for not being a challenge to develop capabilities such as the order of creation and business expansion, favoring the weaker players.

The first gas and mineral deposits are often capped at 50,000 or more to eliminate the need for resource expansion for players. Most of the games occasional melee is played on fast "Fastest" maps, resource-heavy maps near the main building.

The StarCraft Campaign Editor, commonly known as StarEdit, is the official level editor for Starcraft and StarCraft: Brood War programmed by Blizzard Entertainment.
